What is “Measuring up”?
The Powell River Measuring Up Committee was formed in 2006 to address accessibility & inclusion of persons with disabilities in our community. The ‘Measuring Up’ process was developed through 2010 Legacies Now program “Measuring Up”.
This involved Powell River’s taking an inventory of the needs and services available to our citizens who have temporary/ long-term disabilities and barriers. The Measuring Up Committee structured the needs assessment along five major categories (spelling the acronym “T.H.E.R.E”):
- Transportation
- Housing
- Education
- Recreation
- Employment
Below are the initial P.A.T.H drawings that emerged from the 2006 developmental sessions on Powell River’s Measuring Up Committee.
Over the past three years (2006-2009) The Powell River Measuring Up Committee been awarded close to $100,000 through Vancouver Foundation, 2010 Legacies Now/ Measuring Up Program, and Powell River Disability Games grants toward a wide array of projects including volunteer coordination for the 2007 BC Disability Games, a public forum, equipment purchases and donations to local disability sports organizations.
The Committee’s activities listed below have raised awareness and actively promoted Powell River as an inclusive and accessible city. The feedback received from these meetings have driven current efforts toward an employment fair for people with disabilities and their advocates planned for Spring 2009, called “Ability First! Powell River‘s First Disability Career Fair”.
Funded through a grant from The Vancouver Foundation DSEF (Disabilities Supports for Employment Fund)
